Waltham Forest Windrush Festival

June 25 @ 10:00 am - 9:00 pm

The very first Waltham Forest Windrush Festival will bring the community together across multiple venues in celebration of the borough’s Afro-Caribbean heritage. Led by local community groups, the full festival programme will feature the best in Afro-Caribbean music, food, art and history.  Inside Waltham Forest Town Hall an interactive storytelling session will tell the story of Windrush and its legacy through the generations, with Fellowship Square serving as the main festival hub

Waltham Forest Windrush Freedom Walk with Peter Ashan

10am to 11am – Meeting point is The Clock House on Wood Street, Walthamstow ,E17 3NQ and it will finish in Fellowship Square, outside Waltham Forest Town Hall.

The Waltham Forest Windrush Freedom Walk is a tribute to the multi-faith, multi-ethnic Windrush community and their contributions to the borough. Hosted by author and educator Peter Ashan.

Windrush stories

11am to 12pm – Waltham Forest Town Hall Foyer

This unique and innovative interactive storytelling session will feature generations of Windrush community residents as they share their stories and personal artifacts.

Dominoes tournament

11am to 4pm – Fellowship Square, Waltham Forest Town Hall

Dominoes games are a central part of recreational lifestyle in Caribbean countries and they are still played by the first-generation of African Caribbean migrants in clubs across the UK. hosted by the Afro Caribbean Elders Association (ACEA).

Carnival arts, crafts, movement and play

11am to 4pm – Fellowship Square, Waltham Forest Town Hall

Carnival Artists Jenny McKenzie and Teresa Askew will lead arts & crafts making workshops creating Windrush Headpieces to be worn as hats or carried as props and standards.  Fundance Artist, Celestina Banjo will recreate the transatlantic journey through simple movement exercises. Hosted by GB carnival.

Windrush art living room

11am to 4pm – Fellowship Square, Waltham Forest Town Hall

Walthamstow based artist Kimartee (Kim S. Myers) will lead this session to recreate a Windrush living room  with colouring sheets, play dominoes and decorate your own ludo boards.

Afro Caribbean Elders Association Concert

12:30am to 1pm at the Fellowship Square, Waltham Forest Town Hall

Celebrate Afro Caribbean culture through singing and guitar playing with elder Eric Meade and the Afro-Caribbean singers.

African drumming workshop

1:30pm to 2pm and 3:30pm to 4pm – Fellowship Square, Waltham Forest Town Hall

Gambian drummer Seneke Sillah will lead this fun-filled African drumming workshop for all ages. Have a go on a West African djembe drum, singalong with Seneke and learn about the history of the instrument. Presented by Mbilla Arts CIC.

​Windrush journeys​

2pm to 2:20pm at Fellowship Square, Waltham Forest Town Hall

This artist-led workshop presentation will celebrate Windrush stories and memories through simple movement performed to an antiphonal rhythmic soundscape, inspired by playtime games of the times. Presented by GB carnival.

Amadou Diagne

2:30pm to 3pm – Fellowship Square, Waltham Forest Town Hall

Kora is the instrument of the West African griots who pass the oral history down through the generations. Amadou Diagne can trace his music roots through a long family line of Griot musicians and praise singers. A former full-time member of L’Orchestra National du Senegal, Amadou regularly performed as a percussionist in concerts, cultural events and on television for the top West African stars, as well as becoming a busy session musician on the vibrant Dakar music scene.

Windrush: Movement of the people (2018)

7pm to 9pm at St Peter-in-the-Forest

This film screening features the Phoenix Dance Theatre performing Sharon Watson’s Windrush: Movement of the People, the first contemporary dance work to explore the narrative of the arrival of SS Empire Windrush that brought the first Caribbean migrants to the UK.
